Course Description:

This 4-hour workshop will prepare social workers, counselors, and case managers to respond to ethical concerns and emerging issues relative to caring for LGBTQ clients.  

Continuing Education:

MAO is an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6882. This course has been approved for 4.0 contact hours. MAO is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.

Agenda:

8:00 – 9:30 am (1.5 hours)

Counselor Ethics with LGBTQ Clients/Patients 

This workshop will explore the ethical issues that surround care for the LGBTQ client. 

Learning Outcomes – 

1) Participants will explore ethical issues that may be particular to working with the LGBTQ population.  

2) Participants be able to articulate the ethical standards related to working with the LGBTQ population.  

9:30 – 10:30 am (1.0 hour)

Current Legal and Ethical Challenges concerning the LGBTQ client population: Hate, Micro/Macro aggression and Legislation

The workshop will examine the impact of micro and macro aggressions in the media upon the LGBT Q population and its ethical impact. 

Learning Outcomes – 

1) Participants will explore the impact of micro and macro aggressions in the media upon the LGBTQ population and its ethical implications.  

2) Participants will discuss strategies for countering these impacts. 

10:30 – 12:00 pm (1.5 hours)

Ethical case studies concerning the LGBTQ client population.

In a group exercise, case studies will be discussed and ethical decision-making models applied. 

Learning Outcomes – 

1) Participants will explore case studies involving the ethical treatment of LGBTQ clients. 

2) Participants will discuss various approaches to address these ethical situations.
