Tuesday, September 22nd is National Voter Registration Day! Keeping your voice heard by exercising your right to vote is an important part of strong CIVIC health.

MAO is partnering with national efforts to host a Pull-Up Voter Registration Drive from 10 AM until 3 PM behind the MAO Learning Center, 2530 Fisk Road in Montgomery. This will be a nonpartisan event to help Alabama’s citizens stay informed about the voting process, complete voter registration, and know who can and who cannot vote.

Roughly 70% of the population is registered (~3.5m out of ~4.9m) and an average of about 60% of those registered voters actually vote in any given election – with great variation from election to election. According to the Alabama Secretary of State (as of July 2019), “In the State of Alabama, 96 percent of all eligible African Americans are registered to vote, 91 percent of all eligible Caucasian Alabamians are registered to vote, and 94 percent of all eligible Alabamians are registered to vote.”

Alabama has extended the COVID reason for absentee voting, so any registered voter who wishes to vote absentee has the right to do so. The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is Oct. 29, 2020.
